With a desktop PCMCIA adaptor, you can use any PCMCIA device on your home computer.  If you have a digital camera with removable flash media, you can use PCMCIA adaptors to read the flash cards directly.  This is a lot better and faster than serial cables. PCM-CIA and Card-Bus adapters such as modems and video capture devices are typically used with laptops.  These specifications allow vendors to build multiple different devices that will fit in the small and dense confines of notebooks/laptops.
