PREFACE: The keyboard provides the primary tactile interface to the computer. Keyboards are available in a wide variety of styles, shapes, colors, and integrated features. The keyboard has Light Emitting Diodes (LED's) that tell you when Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock modifiers are on. The keyboard is attached to the computer motherboard via either a PS/2 or 5 pin DIN connector and cable. ERGONOMICS: Carpal Tunneling is a serious ailment that affects many people. This ailment affects the person's hand and finger coordination, sensitivity, and strength which can be serious enough to require surgery, consult your physician. Typing on a straight, flat keyboard or typewriter has been proposed as one possible cause for this ailment, or may aggravate the condition. It has been proposed that an ergonomically designed keyboard (a bumpy wave) helps relieve this ailment and may even help prevent it. As in all things, use your own judgement and what feels comfortable for you. FEATURES: Scanners, mouse pads, track balls, speakers, microphones, WIN95 specific quick buttons, and possibly even toilet paper holders have all been incorporated into keyboards. I have one that has a mouse pad built into it. 5 Pin DIN versus PS/2: Before you buy a keyboard, make sure it has the right connector on it. If it has built in features such as a mouse, make sure the mouse connector is also correct. Check your motherboard and computer before you buy the keyboard. I bought a keyboard with a 5 pin DIN keyboard connector and a PS/2 mouse connector for the built in mouse pad. My motherboard supports the 5 pin DIN keyboard connector and the PS/2 mouse connector. MODIFIER LED's: These lights tell you when Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock is engaged. KEYS: Some keyboards "feel" better than others when pressing the keys, try out a variety to find what "feels" good to you. Some people like soft keys, others like a resounding click or thunk. |
