BUILD YOUR OWN NETWORK |
|
On the networking page, general networking topics were discussed. On this page we will detail a working example based on the NEHP DSL service.
The Alcatel DSL modem is covered on this page. NIC's are covered on this page including the configuration of the PCs TCP/IP properties, your specific IP's will be obtained when you purchase your service from NEHP. The Router used in this example is a Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router, Model # BEFSR81 with integrated 8 port Hub. Connect your computer to one of the ports and connect the modem to the WAN port. To access the routers web based configuration, you must first manually set your PC to one of the Router's Intranet IP Addresses, such as 192.168.1.50, 255.255.255.0 with a Gateway of 192.168.1.1 and then reboot. See the previous page for how to do this in Windows. After the reboot, open Internet Explorer and access the Linksys SETUP page. See this page for instructions. Enter the IP, Subnet Mask, and DNS addresses given to you by NEHP. Leave the LAN address set to the default 192.168.1.1. Click Apply and save the changes. It is also recommended that you go to the Password screen and set your own password. Now you are ready to browse the network and add computers as necessary. For every computer you will have to assign it a unique intranet IP. Alternatively, you can configure the Router's built in Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) to automatically assign IPs and configure your computers to use DHCP. |
